Let’s face it, courses are getting bigger, and distances longer. In most cases we want our dogs to run at their speed and not at our speed. If the dogs have confidence in what is expected as they perform each obstacle, then they are much more likely to want to complete that task quickly and accurately. Even if you do not usually handle at distance, it can really help a dog's confidence to learn to work away from the handler!
